Illuka Rowing Club Open New Shed Extension
Following about four years of fundraising and at least four months of sheer hard work from volunteers, the Illuka Rowing Club have a new rowing shed extension. The new extension was officially opened on Friday, 1st December.
The extension will have many positive benefits for the members of the club as it will provide a spacious interior for the clubs boats and equipment, as well as providing storage space and security for their equipment above flood level, something they did not have before this extension.
Together Clarence Nationals MP, Chris Gulaptis and Clarence Valley Council Mayor, Jim Simmonds, cut the ribbon and unveiled the new plaque.
Without grants from the Lorna Knight Foundation, NSW Government, Clarence Valley Council and a great deal of financial support from the Iluka Community organisations and individuals, our dream would never have been realised.
By club members supplying the labour, our builder, Steve Mezes of Bela Building Services was able to keep the costs of the extension to an achievable level.
Club members, almost all over 50, freely gave their time and varying degrees of expertise to ensure the extension and new roof were completed. The construction created much interest from the wider community and visitors alike, and many positive comments have been received.
Now they are back to doing what they love, rowing our sculls on the beautiful Clarence River.
